Experience

Senior Software Development Engineer, Amazon.com — 2000-present

Built several pieces of key infrastructure at Amazon.com working on multiple teams in Perl, C++, and Java.  Projects and responsibilities included:

  1. IMDb.com Theaters Sole developer for all aspects of IMDb’s video platform, including uploads, ingestion, transcoding, Flash players, content-delivery networks, tranmission protocols, surfacing, and relations, in a distributed high-availability environment.

  2. Mechanical Turk http://amazon.com/mechturk  Developed distributed database system to allow scalable access to large amounts of relational data, using MySQL instances as nodes in a Chord-like architecture.

  3. Target.com  and Seller Central http://target.com  http://sellercentral.amazon.com  Helped build the web server software for Amazon’s next generation platform, first launched for target.com and  Seller Central, Amazon’s web-based content-management software for merchants;  specifically, building the safe Perl-based template engine for web developers, and co-inventing a content release system.  This platform is now used for all Amazon external websites.

  4. Education and Mentorship.  Delivered several training courses and single lectures for web developers and Perl programmers on topics such as OO programming, internationalization, XSLT, and Amazon’s proprietary web frameworks.   Winner of internal company innovation award.

  5. Inventor,  US Patent No. 7,373,594  “Managing a Release of Electronic Content Using a Template without Version Logic”  and US Patent No. 7,392,510, “System for Tracking and Providing Access to Information about Server Components Invoked During the Dynamic Generation of Web Pages”, and other filed patents.   I am against the non-defensive use of software patents, and am an open source contributor.

Systems Operations Manager, Amazon.com  — 1998-2000

Developed the 24x7 monitoring team at Amazon.com from 3 people in a closet with a browser to over 40 people monitoring global operations via multiple System/Network Operations Centers across the US.   This became the first line of defense for all Amazon production software and hardware systems including the retail website, and handled coordination for all high-severity launches, changes, and problems.

Instructor, University of Washington Extension  2002-2009
Highly rated instructor for UW’s Perl Certificate program, XML, web-services, and C courses.  Over 400 hours of lecture time over 14  thirty-hour courses.  I am an experienced and vibrant speaker, able to make programming fun and interesting and demonstrate many different approaches to problems.

Captain, US Army,  Fort Drum, NY — 1993-1998
