More furniture

Almost forgot to mention; we bought a new bed as well. It really
brings home how small our bedroom is! It's a queen-size sleigh bed and
it looks beautiful, and with the matching nightstand it will barely
fit. I don't think there'll be room for a co-sleeper for the baby on
the side (and even if there was it would block all access to the
closet). I'm loath to give up the idea of a co-sleeper because it
just seems like it will let us all have a more normal sleep-life.

I think I will also move the computer and keyboard (music) up to the
library; that way I can be on the same floor as the baby all the time.

Kitchen of Doom

We just got the estimates for our kitchen. It's like $9000 just for
the cabinet boxes, then there's more for installation, the countertop,
to finish off the tiles, the appliances, and taxes! But even that
number is suspect because Nancy now wants a simpler facing (which is
cheaper), and I mis-measured by 12 inches, so we have to cut out some
from the end. And we are probably not going to get as many glass
windows in the cupboards as Nancy originally thought. Also still have
to decide between Corian countertop and quartz.

I think I will just ask the contractor if he can do the rest of the
tiles. We did the dining room ourselves, but in the kitchen, with new
cabs to come and appliances still in place, it's so hard to get
started. And then will come the painting...

But it should look amazing when we are done...and we will have so much
more room in the same amount of space.

Nancy Loves Blogging

This site is starting to take off. Nancy is posting a huge
story daily, and my sisters and Carrie all asked for a blog
of their own (you can find links to them all at
http://www.trederfamily.org ). I'm thinking about writing a
cron that would pull the most recent headlines to the front
page every 10 minutes...shouldn't be too hard.

His/her blood runs maize and blue of course!! (we'll find out the sex
middle of June)

Healthy Baby!

We got our test results today from Nancy's "Integrated Screening"! The
baby is very healthy! The test is a detailed ultrasound with pictures
(to detect how well-formed the spinal cord is, for things like spina
bifida) and a big blood test checking for several different proteins.
The main idea is to avoid doing an amniocentesis if you don't have to.
If the screen says you have a risk of Down's syndrome or trisomy 18 (or
neural cord defect) then you do an amnio, otherwise you avoid all those
needles and the risk. And our baby is very healthy: the risk for
mothers Nancy's age is usually 1 in 400 but for our baby it is less than
1 in 20,000 ( as low as it goes). So we are very very happy to know
he's ok!

Even 1 in 400 odds are pretty good and I would still of course have a
child, but it's so relieving to know that you can be nearly certain
(even more certain than most mothers ever are) that our kid is doing well.

Semantic Web Stinketh :)

I'm not as wellread as some programmers...I'm just now getting to some of these articles on Shirky.com. Here's a great one on situated software (http://www.shirky.com/writings/situated_software.html), and also an extremely good critique of the Semantic web.. Of course this is the same guy who said micropayments will never work, and we'll eventually prove him wrong there, eh?

ye old Component Inspector

Boy I'm ticked at a guy here at work. I created a cool gadget called
the Component Inspector at work. It helps debug our web software
platform and it's graphical with popup windows and panes and such.
Anyway, the new group that's supposedly taking care of it has managed to
break it. It's always kind of sad to see old software die, but this
software is only a couple of months old! Worse, one of the members of
the new team managed to get the patent application for it, while not
writing any of the code for it! (In fact I never even discussed it with
him prior to seeing him with the patent lawyers!) And it turns out
another member of their group is writing a competing tool. I guess
that's why they don't feel any need to support it. No names named, but
they know who they are.

Apparently writing blogs is supposed to help you get things off your
chest. Consider this a "functional" test message then.

Here goes...

So I've managed to set up a blog, finally, on trederfamily.org. It's a
new domain name to replace trederfamily.com, which I lost (grr) to a
domain squatter. It wasn't really that hard, even considering I don't
know any PHP - it pretty much installed itself, but I did learn a few
things about installing and upgrading ports on a BSD box.

Anyway I plan to set up blogs for all my family here, and the email
posting is pretty nice.
